EcoBlu Products' Fire Resistance Tests a Success
Carlsbad, CA., January 11, 2010 - EcoBlu Products, Inc. (OTCBB: ECOB) announced today that it has received results of fire resistance testing of its FRC Technology (Fire Retardant Coating) on an I-joist floor/ceiling assembly. The tested assembly was conducted in accordance with the following standard methods with the exception of the sample size, ASTM E119-09, CAN/ULC S101-07, NFPA 251, UBC 7-1 (1997), and UL 263, Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials for a duration of 1 hour. The assembly survived 60 minutes of fire exposure with no flaming or burn-through of the floor surface.
EcoBlu Products contracted Intertek Testing Services NA Ltd., a global leader in testing, inspection and certification services, to evaluate its FRC Technology when applied to a typical I-joist floor/ceiling assembly used in wood frame construction. The tested assembly consisted of an EcoBlu 9-1/2" I-joist spaced 24" on center with the perimeter framed with 1-3/4" by 9-3/4" LVL beams. IBS2000 cross bracing was used at the center of the assembly between LVL beams and I-joists. The top surface was sheathed with OSB subfloor, and the bottom surface with 5/8" Type X gypsum. All wood components were coated with EcoBlu's FRC Technology.
"These burn results are very impressive since fire has been the hottest topic on engineered wood products (EWP) for years. Engineered Wood Products are critical to the home building industry, however, they burn faster than the solid lumber floors currently used by most builders," said Steve Conboy, President and CEO of EcoBlu Products.
Conboy says his goal is to develop a cost effective solution to help home builders when it comes to the new ICC Code change that took place in November, 2009. The ICC change RB31-09/10 states that all residential floors using I-joist in crawl spaces and basements now need 1/2 drywall or fire sprinklers to be compliant. Using EcoBlu's FRC Technology on the I-joist and floor system will eliminate the need for drywall or fire sprinklers, creating a significant advantage for the residential home builder, while maintaining fire code standards.
"EcoBlu's FRC Technology will be more important than ever to reduce costs and save lives," added Conboy. EcoBlu's Engineered Wood Products will be the first to have the complete protection package installed on them at the mill level. With mold, fire and termites being some of the biggest problems associated with wood framed buildings, the EcoBlu product Line is poised for considerable growth.
The American Plywood Association (APA) estimates that 565 million feet or about $1.01 billion worth of I-joist will be consumed in North America in 2010.
